Batla House Encounter: Shahzad Sentenced to Life
Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Shahzad Ahmed was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court on Tuesday in the 2008 Batla House encounter case. Last week, he was convicted by the court. He was the only man arrested in the case.
Shahzad has been ordered to pay Rs 95,000 as fine of which Rs 40,000 would be paid to family of slain inspector MC Sharma.
He was found guilty of opening fire at a police team to kill Delhi police inspector Mohan Chand Sharma. He was also found guilty of criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence.
The prosecution had demanded death sentence for Shahzad. However, the court sentenced him to life.
The encounter had taken place at flat no L-18, Batla House in Jamia Nagar area in Delhi on September 19, 2008, six days after serial bomb blasts rocked the national capital that had killed 26 people injured 133 others.
