Ballpoint Pen may give relief from Arthritis Pain
TNI Bureau: In a major breakthrough, the scientists have developed a new medical equipment in the shape of a ballpoint pen, which can give relief from arthritis pain. They claim that this pen can shock nerves into blocking pain signals and so can be used to treat arthritis and those suffering from headaches and even facial pain.
It has been developed by researchers of the MyoScience Company of the US.
The pen has a tip just like a ballpoint pen, which would be cooled to 20 degree Celsius using the liquid- nitrogen present inside it. The device will be pierced into the skin of the patient against a nerve to provide him relief. In other words, it can work on pain by slowing and even stopping the signals traveling along the nerves.
The MyoScience ‘pen’ works by putting cold liquid inside the device under high pressure when turned on transforming it into an extremely cold gas which cools its metal tip. The needle-shaped tip is then inserted into the skin by a physician and the process will take just a few second to cool the tissue.
Earlier this device, which works using cryotherapy has been approved for use in Britain.Cryotherapy is the local or general use of low temperatures in medical therapy. It is used to treat a variety of benign and malignant lesions to decrease cellular metabolism, increase cellular survival, decrease inflammation, decrease pain. The extreme temperature is used to destroy cells by crystallizing the cytosol.
