The death toll due to medical negligence in a sterlisation camp at Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, has now reached 13 even as a probe has been ordered into the shocking incident. Over 50 women are still critical.
The state government has ordered a probe and suspended four doctors involved in the surgeries. Around 83 women had undergone laparoscopic sterilisation as part of an annual family planning camp in Bilaspur. The operation theatre where they underwent surgery, had not been used for the past four months. The government-run Nemi Chand Hospital was used for this purpose.

Some reports suggest that a large number of surgeries were performed in a single day to meet targets. They claimed that deaths occurred due to botched sterilisation procedure. However, health officials have denied any negligence on their part. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked Chhattisgarh CM Dr. Raman Singh to ensure a thorough investigation and proper action.
Chhattisgarh CM Dr. Raman Singh has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of each deceased and medical assistance along with Rs 50,000 to all patients. A special team from the AIIMS, Delhi, has rushed to Bilaspur to treat the patients.
