Sushma Swaraj, Women MPs condemn Delhi Gangrape
TNI Bureau: The leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj demanded death penalty for the culprits, who raped the 23-year-old para medical student in Delhi on Sunday night. Even several women MPs in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha condemned the heinous act. The issue rocked the parliament and Rajya Sabha was adjourned repeatedly.
Sushma said, “The 23-year-old girl was with a male friend and it was not too late either. It was 9.30 pm. And if a woman is not safe even then, then it is a shame. If this girl survives, she will be a living dead. These people should be given capital punishment.”
She said that the act shows that the complete decline in law and order situation in the national capital. The police patrolling is also questionable. She said that when a woman gets killed, she is dead once, but when a woman gets raped, she dies many times.
The BJP demanded clarification on the issue from the Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and women MPs threatened to stage demonstration in Delhi on Wednesday.
Speaker Meira Kumar directed the government to take stern action against the culprits and take measures over the issue without delay. “This is a serious issue. This is a heinous act. I will allow you to raise the matter during Zero Hour,” she said. However, no reaction was seen from Congress President Sonia Gandhi side.
The brutal act was condemned in Rajya Sabha with the question raised by women MPs. Actress-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan said that she was speechless when she heard the news. “Our culture and belief that women are goddesses… all have been laid waste today. What is happening in the country and the capital is shocking”, she said.
JD(U) leader Shivanand Tiwari called the Delhi gangrape a failure of the Delhi police. He also expressed his deep concern over the growing rape cases in the state like Kerala where women are reportedly being raped by their fathers and brothers.
Meanwhile, the Delhi police have arrested four people so far in the case. Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University staged a demonstration outside the Vasant Kunj Police Station protesting against security lapse.
The students said Delhi is completely unsafe for women where they could not step out of their homes at night and police could not control the crime.
