Sonia, Rahul, Manmohan in Muzaffarnagar
A day after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav visited the riot-hit areas of Muzaffarnagar only to be greeted with black flags, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and party Vice President Rahul Gandhi visited the region and assured all help to the affected people.
The PM took a dig at the Uttar Pradesh Government, saying it’s the duty of the state administration to ensure safety and security of the people irrespective of caste, creed or religion. The PM termed the Muzaffarnagar riots as a big tragedy.
Dr. Singh asked the Uttar Pradesh Government to ensure safety and rehabilitation of the displaced people. He also called for punishing the guilty people responsible for riots.
At least 48 people were killed, over 100 injured and around 43,000 were left homeless in the communal clashes that occurred in the region in the last two weeks. The Army had to intervene to restore calm and normalcy in the riot-affected areas.
