Jolt to Pakistan, India win Kishanganga Dam Dispute
India scored a major victory, as the International Court of Arbitration at The Hague upheld its right to divert water from the Kishanganga Hydroelectric Project (KHEP), giving a massive jolt to Pakistan. The court observed that India adheres to all provisions of Indus Waters Treaty.
Pakistan had objected to the construction of the hydroelectric project on the Kishanganga river in Kashmir, saying India had violated the terms. Kishanganga is called Neelum in Pakistan. India diverts water from the Kishanganga river to a power plant in the Jhelum River basin.
The Kishanganga dam dispute strained the relations between India and Pakistan. There have been jubilation on the Indian side after the court verdict. It came as a big setback for Pakistan.
