Govt declares Rs 5lakh relief for 1984 victims
The Narendra Modi government has decided to give compensation of five lakh rupees to the kin of 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims. The government also said that this compensation will be in addition to the compensations given by government and other agencies so far.
The compensation will be given at the earliest and will cost 166 crore rupees to the exchequer. As many as 3,325 people were killed in the anti-Sikh riots following assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 31st October, 1984.
In 2006, The Manmohan Singh government had announced a Rs 717 crore rehabilitation package for 1984 victims, from which of Rs.3.5 lakh each to the next of kin riot victims was disbursed. However, Rs 517 crore had been spent in this regard and the remaining Rs 200 crore could not be distributed due to dispute over claimants.
