Cyclone Hudhud hits Visakhapatnam Coast
The much-hyped Cyclone Hudhud finally hit the Visakhapatnam Coast in Andhra Pradesh with a wind speed of 180km per hour, causing havoc in the city and adjoining areas. Other districts such as Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and East Godavari are also badly hit by Cyclone Hudhud.
The landfall occurred at around 11:30 AM although the edge of the storm touched the outskirts of Vizag at 11 AM. At least 2 people were killed in Vizag as per the early reports.
Power supply has been completely disrupted in these Coastal Andhra districts. Over 3 lakh people were earlier evacuated to safer locations. Trees and electric poles have been uprooted elsewhere, blocking the roads. Mobile networks have also taken a hit. The NDRF teams, Navy and other rescue teams are working full time to reduce the casualties. Heavy rains and gusty wind conditions may prevail for another 4-5 hours.
High tides have been reported in the Bay of Bengal at Vizag, Gopalpur and Puri. In South Odisha, Ganjam, Gajapati, Malakangiri and Koraput districts are witnessing heavy rains along gusty winds of 60-70 km per hour.
