Narendra Modi’s key aide and the man behind BJP’s spectacular success in Uttar Pradesh in 2014 polls, Amit Shah has been appointed as the BJP President. He will replace Rajnath Singh, who has now become the Union Home Minister. It was Amit Shah, who played a key role in the installation of Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India. The decision to appoint Amit Shah as the party President, was taken at the BJP Parliamentary Party meeting.
Under Amit Shah, BJP won 71 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, while two seats went to its ally Apna Dal. No other party had tasted such a resounding victory in the recent past. Shah held the post of General Secretary in the BJP.

Amit Shah, born on October 22, 1964, was a four-time MLA from Sarkhej in Gujarat. He won the elections in 2012 from Naranpura. He held various portfolios in the Narendra Modi Cabinet in Gujarat. After his name cropped up in various “fake encounter” cases during his tenure as the Gujarat Home Minister, he had to resign.
Later, he was arrested and put in jail. Shah was later granted bail on the condition that he would not stay in Gujarat. He was allowed to return to Gujarat in 2012. He got a clean chit in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case and recently received the Z Plus security cover. With Amit Shah at the helm, the BJP will focus more on building its organisation in the states, where it has low-key presence.
