Serena Williams wins 5th US Open Title
World No. 1 Serena Williams won her fifth US Open title and 17th grand slam overall, when she defeated second-ranked Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 6-7 (6/8), 6-1 in the final last night.
The 31-year-old Serena also became the oldest Open Era Women’s winner in the US Open history. After winning the title, she hailed Victoria Azarenka for the great resolve she showed in the final and termed playing against her honourable.
Serena Williams matched Steffi Graf for second on the Open Era list with five US Open titles, one short of Chris Evert’s record. She also became the first woman since Justine Henin in 2007 to win the US and French Open titles in the same year.
