Kalmadi ousted as AAA President
Sacked Commonwealth Games Organising Committee’s chief Suresh Kalmadi was ousted today as the President of Asian Athletics Association (AAA) after he lost the re-election bid to Qatar’s Dahlan Jumaan Al-Hamad on the first day of the continental body’s two-day Congress in Pune.
Kalmadi, who is on out of jail on bail these days, was the President of Asian Athletics Association for past 13 years. Kalmadi is allegedly involved in the massive Commonwealth Games scam. He lost 18-20 to Hamad, who is the Qatar Athletics Federation President and also the senior vice-president of the Asian body.
The 20th Congress was attended by International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) President Lamine Diack and some top officials from Asian Athletics Association, two days before Asian Athletics Championships that is scheduled for July 3-7.
The Congress is the governing body of the AAA. It consists of a council, not more than two delegates from each member of AAA. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is represented by its president, Adille Sumariwala, and Secretary C.K. Valson.
