Blow to MCI, Supreme Court quashes NEET
It was a huge blow to the Medical Council of India (MCI) when the Supreme Court quashed its notification for holding common entrance tests for MBBS, BDS and PG medical courses. However, the verdict will not affect the admissions which have already been conducted.
According to the court, the MCI is not empowered to prescribe National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET). A bench by three judges said that the MCI notification was ultra vires of the Constitution of India and it violates Articles 19, 25, 26, 29 and 30 of the Constitution.
The verdict came on 115 petitions challenging the MCI notification on NEET for admission to MBBS and post-graduate medical courses.
