At one stage, England were 139/5, but Matt Prior and debutant Joseph Root rescued the team and prevented any further damage. England maintained an exceptional low run rate and failed to play positive cricket. Indian bowlers bowled 97 overs – seven more than the usual quota of 90 overs.

Kevin Pietersen scored 73, while Trott made 44. Root and Prior were batting on 31 and 34 respectively. Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each. England would be looking forward to score in excess of 300, while Indian bowlers would try to restrict them within 250 or so.
