‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ (YJHD) is a pleasant and light ride, the film does not drags you either into great suspense or top brass action, but the smooth and simple ride of the film deserve kudos. If I am not telling big, we have already got the best film of this year now.
YJHD is Ayan Mukherji’s second directorial project after his debut in ‘Wake up Sid’ five years back. And after watching the film, it seems that the guy has not wasted his time in between, rather spent every moment to plan, plot and improvise the sequences to offer a good film finally after all.
The film houses several lively scenes and that is the admiring element. And casting of the ‘unalienable four’ is a perfect decision.
Story is the magic stick that either elevates a film or destroys everything all together. Interestingly, here the story is ideal to match your mind. At least young mass will love to live a life someday that the four friends passed in the film in the icy meadows of Manali.
Plot – The film revolves around four classmates cum friends Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor), Naina (Deepika Padukone), Avi (Aditya Roy Kapoor) and Aditi (Kalki Koechlin). Once they take a trip to Manali in their holidays and make it larger than life with adventurous spots. While Bunny is a flirt, Naina, the medical student is a shy one, who hardly understands and feels the meaning of ‘fun’. But subsequently things change with tender touch of Bunny, the flirting boy and friendship turns in to love.
Some scenes are really appealing like – the one when Bunny and Naina shout from the top of the ‘haunted peak’. It can be compared with the signature shot of ‘Titanic’ where Leo and Kate stand at the extreme front of the vessel to feel the romantic breezy moment. Also sequences between the father-son Farooq Sheikh and Ranbir Kapoor are heart stirring.
Dialogues of YJHD are very good and to the time. The concept is the cool thing to feel. Like his earlier films ‘Burfi’ and this director’s ‘Wake up Sid’, Ranbir Kapoor is a delight as always. Deepika Padukone is decent while Kalki Koechlin is cute.

Ranbir and Deepy’s onscreen chemistry is another point of success in the film. They are marvelous as a pair. Deepika has again stunned the audience with her acting prowess like that she had exhibited in ‘Cocktail’.
Aditya Roy Kapur is a real fun to watch out and looks charming. Kalki Koechlin is cute, funny and so lovable. The supporting cast – Farooq Sheikh, Tanvi Azmi, Kunal Roy Kapur, Dolly Ahluwalia are equally well and all of them do justice to their respective characters.
Madhuri Dixit is the brightest treat in the film. Her ‘Ghagra’ number with Ranbir steals the show. Watching her onscreen, one can’t feel that she has lived a family life of around 10 years in between, following her last appearance in Bollywood. It seems she is performing the next film just after ‘Devdas’.
V Maniknandan’s cinematography is outstanding. He captures Manali in all its brilliance with shots of the snow-capped mountains. Well, the editing could be bit better but not at all discouraging; it presents everything whenever it is expected.
Pritam’s music is lively and melodious, which was the utmost prerequisite of this lively script. All the songs with special mention to ‘Balam Pichkari’ and ‘Ghagra’ are the best pieces of music.
The film was long-awaited and finally it came with the right doze of entertainment. YJHD is sure to work well for the young crowd. Go watch the movie or you’ll lose something big if you are a fan of Bollywood good films.
