Actor Sanjay Dutt gets 5 Years in Jail
In a massive blow to Bollywood Actor Sanjay Dutt, the Supreme Court sentenced him to five years in jail in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts. Dutt has been given one month’s time to surrender. As Sanjay Dutt had already served 18 months in jail, he will have to serve three and half years more.
The Supreme Court upheld the verdict delivered by the TADA court, but reduced the jail term to five from six years. The SC verdict came as a big setback for Sanjay Dutt and his family. Dutt was convicted for illegal possession of arms during the Mumbai riots. He was punished under the Arms Act, but was acquitted of terror charges. He won’t be able to shoot pictures during the remaining three and a half years of prison term.
The mastermind of 1993 Mumbai blasts, Yakub Memon’s death sentence has been upheld by the apex court. At least 13 blasts rocked Mumbai on March 12 in 1993, leaving 257 dead and over 700 injured. The attacks were coordinated by underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, who is still absconding.
