A Tribute to Freedom Fighter Annapurna Moharana

TNI Bureau: Freedom fighter and noted social activist Annapurna Moharana, who recently passed away, will be remembered for her contribution to the society and country. She was added to the list of veterans who died last year. She will reside in the heart of down trodden women and abandoned children.

Annapurna passed away at her residence in Cuttack on Dec 31 night. She was 96. She is survived by two sons. Her husband Sarat Moharana had passed away three years ago.

Born to Odisha’s noted freedom fighter Rama Devi and Gopabandhu Choudhury, she had joined the freedom struggle at the age of 14. She was the follower of Mahatma Gandhi. Even she had accompanied him in the ‘Harijan Pada Yatra’ from Puri to Bhadrak in 1934.

Raising her voice against the British rule, the veteran had been imprisoned during Quit India Movement in 1942. She had also joined Bhoodan Movement of Acharya Vinoba Bhave.

After independence, Annapurna spent her life in social work. Her contribution for the upliftment of socially deprived women and children will never be forgotten. She had set up a school for tribal kids in Rayagada district.

She has been conferred with several awards like President of India Award, Sarala Puraskar, Utkal Ratna and Radhanath Rath Foundation Award. Recently, she had received an award from the Central University, Koraput, for her social service in the tribal district.
