The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action taken report(ATR) from district administration and Police over the killing of a college student in Odisha’s Nayagarh district.
Acting on a complaint of Human Rights Activist Akhand, the Commission has directed the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Nayagarh to file the reports within four weeks. Pradip Behera, a student of a local college, was killed and at least 30 others were seriously injured when police opened fire at the protesters in Chandpur under Ranpur Police station. The incident occured on September 11.
They were demanding the arrest of the culprits responsible for the murder of four members of a family at Shashtri Nagar in Chandpur on September 6. The people were protesting failure of police to nab the murderers.

The local people have been on a dharma near the local police outpost for the five days protesting police failure to nab the murderers. Many of the angry protestors was demanding an answer. But, the cops were not ready to answer, said Akhand.
“It is a inhuman action by the police. Without talking with the protestors, the police began action against the innocent people. The deceased was not involved any violence. But Police shoot at him”, alleged Akhand in his petition before NHRC.
It is noted that, On 6 September, four members of a family including two children were found murdered inside their house at Shastri Nagar. The local people have since been demanding the arrest of the culprits but the police have so far failed to crack the case.
Odisha Government has already ordered a crime branch inquiry into the murder case and a probe by the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC), Central, into the police firing incident.
