Jolly LLB – A Complete Review
The two Bollywood veterans Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani once again prove their crowd pulling aptitude in the Subhas Kapoor directed ‘JOLLY LLB’. Kapoor, the director of ‘Phas Gaye Re Obama’ took an intelligent decision to add both these perfectionist and connoisseurs of comedy drama along with Amrita Rao and some talented actors including Sourav Shukla and others as the supporting cast.
As the title provides, the story is all about a small town advocate from Meerut Jagdish Tyagi alias Jolly (Arshad Warsi), who hardly can be called an advocate for his amusing court-room mistakes. He spells appeal as apple and writes prostitution for prosecution. Sandhya (Amrita Rao) is her lady love. The struggling lawyer wants to make it big in life like his idol Rajpal (Boman Irani) and someday moves to Delhi in search of a huge career but ultimately gets a case where the opposite counsel is Rajpal himself, India’s existing popular and expensive lawyer. Boman plays a top-shot lawyer whose job is to bend the law to suit the rich. The main case in the film is about the wealthy Nanda family whose son kills some people sleeping on the footpath, driving drunk at night. The film is a social satire on the law system of India and presented in a perfectly entertaining way.
The director’s role becomes very less as the actors he took were marvelous. So the directorial aspect does not need to be discussed. The plot is though not new, is simple and provides ample scope to the actors to justify their roles. Earlier, Bollywood has taken the subject in ‘kyo kii main jhuth nahin bolta’ and some other movies. Even in ‘Meri Jung’ Subhash Ghai had taken the same subject, but approach of that film was serious, not comedy. So plot is ‘old wine new bottle’ but can be tagged ‘still good’.
Performances of all the lead actors including Boman, Arshad and Sourav Shukla are outstanding. Arshad’s silly mistakes including “Witness ko pesh karna chahta hoon…” are hilarious. Yes, Amrita had little to do in the film, still she was okay.
Though Krishna, (Tanu Weds Manu fame) tries to offer a soothing music, it is not up to the mark despite the melodious number ‘Jhoot Boliya’ by Kamal Khan. Music does not fit well with the scene at many places.
Jolly LLB is an entertaining film filled with quirky humour. The film brilliantly delivers the discrepancies of the Indian Judicial system. However, the film comes in ‘must watch’ category if you love comedy and especially if you are fan of Arsad warsi or Boman Irani.
