Baby Girl “sold” in Cuttack, Rescued
Cuttack: While the government and many NGOs are working together to prevent female foeticide, child labour and child abandonment, another case of child sale was reported in Odisha. A 3-month-old baby was rescued from Bidyadharpur in Cuttack while her mother tried to sell her to another woman for Rs 1,000.
The district administration saved the baby girl after coming to know the entire episode. Report said that Namita Pradhan, mother of the baby girl, had allegedly handed over her baby to another woman called Jhini four days ago. She asked her for Rs 1,000 for it.
Jhini was told that the baby’s mother has died. She adopted the baby as she was a divorcee and childless. However, the baby’s mother denied the allegations that she had sold her baby.
Namita said that she had handed over the baby to Jhini for her better future as she was poor and could not bear the expenses of her baby, who is her second child. She denied that the baby was sold. Namita works as a domestic help. Her husband is a daily labourer. The second child became a burden for them as the couple has already a baby girl.
However, the district administration rescued the baby and handed over her back to her mother.
