Academic Session begins at AIIMS-Jodhpur
TNI Bureau: The academic session of the AIIMS commenced at Jodhpur, Rajasthan, with 50 students. This is the second Institute after Delhi and is the first among the six upcoming projects of the national medical institute in the country, announced by the NDA government in 2004.
Then, six new AIIMS had been announced to work across the country keeping in view the big rush of patients at the only AIIMS in Delhi. AIIMS Jodhpur is the first among the list while the proposed others are at Bhubaneswar (Odisha), Raipur (Chhattisgarh), Bhopal (MP), Rishikesh (Uttarakhand) and Patna (Bihar).
Out of the 50 students at the maiden session, 30 are from Rajasthan. The institute will have 24 faculties, which will be increased to 91 by October as per reports.
Addressing the inaugural session, Jodhpur AIIMS’s founder-director and noted surgeon Sanjeev Mishra committed to highest standards of teaching, research and treatment.
Joint secretary, Union health ministry, Rakesh Kumar intimated that construction of the building started in 2006 and so far the academic block has been completed and from September 2013 construction of the hospital will start which will have 950 beds including a trauma unit.
The inaugural session was attended by the former director of AIIMS (New Delhi) and Padma Shri recipient S K Kakkar, principal of S N Medical College (Jodhpur) Arvind Mathur along with Rakesh Kumar. It was followed by the book distribution programme to the first year MBBS students and plantation.
