IOC suspends Indian Olympic Association
TNI Bureau: In a major jolt to Indian sports and embarrassment to millions of people in the country, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has suspended the Indian Olympic Association (IOC) with immediate effect for its alleged failure in adhering to the Olympics charter.
The decision will have huge ramifications on Indian sports, as India won’t be able to participate in major sports events, including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. The decision to suspend India was taken at the executive body meeting of the IOC at Lausanne.
The IOC observed that the IOA failed to comply with the world body’s rule and allowed government intervention in its polls despite several warnings. Meanwhile, the IOA President Abhay Singh Chautala has blamed Randhir Singh, who is India’s representative at the International Olympic Committee for the mess.
According to Chautala, Randhir Singh sabotaged India’s prospects at the IOC after being forced to withdraw his nominations for the post of President of IOA. Many former Olympians and sportspersons in India have blamed the politics at the IOA for India’s humiliation on global arena.
