Odisha Cyclone and Flood Death Toll rises to 36
The death toll in Odisha Cyclone and floods, has touched 36 as of yesterday. 21 people had died in Cyclone, while the flood toll stands at 15. The Odisha Government has sought Rs 1,523 crore from the Centre to expedite relief and restoration efforts.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has wrote a letter to the Prime Minister, seeking an advance payment of Rs 1,000 crore over and above the corpus of Rs 523 crore available in the State Disaster Response Fund for 2013-14. Ganjam district alone, may need Rs 900 crore for restoration work.
Number of affected people in the twin calamities, have been estimated at 1.21 crore, while the number of disaster-hit villages have reached 17,674 in 17 districts. In total, 647 villages across the state remained marooned by the flood water. The worst-affected districts by the floods, include Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Keonjhar. However, the situation is improving fast.
