By Triveni Sharma: Kausani, originally known as Valna is a hill resort located in Bageshwar, district of Uttarakhand. The place is 6,075 meters above the sea level. It is a very picturesque hill station which provides an excellent view of the Himalayas, and the views of deep pine forests.

The place is also known as “Switzerland of India” and is blessed with snow in the months of December and January. The best time to visit Kausani is from April to November.  It is worthwhile to keep some woolen clothing during this time too.

Famous poet Sumitra Nandan Pant was born in this place. In 1929, Mahatama Gandhi spent almost two weeks in Kausani. The place he lived during his visit is called Anasakti ashram. It is a famous tourist spot. Because of its natural beauty, visitors usually come here all over the year. It is the perfect place to holiday with the family.

The tranquil and placid hamlet of Kausani, located amidst dense forests and lofty mountains, offers tourists interesting trekking opportunities as well. It is the distinct landscape and beautiful atmosphere of the place, along with varied flora and fauna, which makes it an ideal trekking location.

It is a quiet little place where tourists can go for long walk and enjoy tranquility. Trekking down the roads of Kausani is another interesting activity to do. There are many excursions in Kausani like:

Pant Museum

Pant Museum, the birth place of famous Hindi-Poet Sumitra Nandan Pant, is another place worth visiting in Kausani. It has a gallery, especially built in the memory of Pant, with a collection of over hundreds of English and Hindi books, displayed in glass shelves.
Lakshmi Ashram

Established in 1964 by Catherine Hillman, a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, Lakshmi Ashram is a famous destination in Kasauni. The ashram usually works for the progress of Kumaoni women to make them self-dependent. Women are taught several skills, like growing vegetables, cooking, caring for the animals and cleaning. The basic purpose of Lakshmi Ashram is to provide Kumaoni women a safe shelter and equip them with basic skills to lead an independent life.

Baijnath Temple, Kausani Baijnath is a famous temple built by Katyuri rulers. Merely 17 km from the town of Kausani, it is made up of a cluster of Shiv-Parvat temple. In this temple complex, the main attraction is the black stone idol of Mata Parvati at the main entrance. Kot-ki-Mai is another famous temple of Maa Kali, which is situated 8 km away from Baijnath.

 

Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary
Nature lovers can move from Kausani to Binsar to see the famous wildlife sanctuary here. Binsar also offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges.

 

Chaukori

Chaukori is situated 75 km away from Kausani. The place is famous for its clear views of the Himalayas. The views of sunset and sunrise look mesmerizing and beautiful from the place.

The other places around Kausani are Almora, Nainital, Ranikhet, Pindari Glacier; Kafni Glacier, Patal Bhubaneswar, Bageshwar, Someshwar, Rudhradhari Falls & Cave, etc.
