TNI Bureau: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur could face heat from Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal as it decided to conduct its own entrance test for undergraduate programmes in 2013.
The institute’s academic 210-member senate rejected Sibal’s ‘one nation, one test’ proposal refusing to be part of the common entrance test (CET) for all IITs, NITs and IIITs.
The move was taken after being upset with the government on their demand to recall the decision on a common engineering entrance test. Now India’s top most institutes is planning to move the court against CET.

The decision was backed by more than 60 faculties at IIT Kanpur’s Friday meeting. With the move, students from across the country will be able to sit for entrance in 2013. The CET proposal might be considered in 2014. But the institute will conduct its own entrance exam for the year 2013.
There are signs that other IITs may follow Kanpur’s warpath. If the top institute will conduct their separate exams, it would put burden on the students.
IIT Kanpur Professor AK Chaturvedi said, “Hopes of lakhs of students each year rest on these exams. So the government shouldn’t take it lightly. The decision on JEE should be taken after proper research and figures are taken into account.”
The decision came days after government rejected criticism of the decision to have a common IIT-JEE examination from 2013. Last month, Sibal had announced that the aspiring candidates for IITs, and other central institutes like NITs, IIITs will sit under a new format of common entrance test and the results of the +2 board will be taken into consideration from 2013.
