Fright of Mass Bird death in Malkangiri
TNI Bureau: With advent of the New Year, while Uttar Pradesh is shivering in cold, Malkangiri, the Maoist prone district of Odisha has witnessed another scary and unnatural phenomenon. Flocks of birds are found dead at different places of the town for last five days.
Homeopathy doctor Dr. Monalisa Naik of Block Colony found some birds dead in her garden and called for veterinary doctor Sarat Chandra Bisoi who visited the spot and collected the dead birds to send for examination.
Dead bodies of the birds, including crow and dove are found in block colony, Lathiaguda, Nuaguda, MV2 and some other areas of the town.
Initially, people were taking it easy, but the constant death of the birds has created panic among the dwellers as some of them believe it be the sign of some big natural trouble. Some people have depicted it to be ‘Pakkhi modaka’ in the colloquial language.
While the town of Malkangiri has not forgotten the panic of the Japanese encephalitis, this is another shocking development that has roused fright among the mass.
However, Scientists have not found the reason of this mass death of birds. Since a large number of chickens are brought to the town daily for food, the probability of ‘bird flu’ can also not be avoided.
We should note that not only in India, but this unnatural occurrence has also been witnessed in the western countries including in the US. Early this week, some 500 birds were discovered scattered on a rural road in Louisiana’s Pointe Coupee Parish in Arkansas. Officials there are baffled as to what caused the birds to plunge to their death.
Some researchers have described starvation, storms, disease, pesticides and collisions with man-made structures or human disturbance as the possible reasons of this mass death of birds.
