Central University celebrates National Press Day
The National Press Day was celebrated at the Central University of Orissa at its campus in Koraput. The programme was organized by the Centre for Journalism & Mass Communication. Professor Sunil Kant Behera, Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Berhampur University was the Chief Guest of the programme.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Pradosh Kumar Rath, Dep’t in Charge, Centre for Journalism & Mass Communication, Central University of Orissa. After the introductory speech by Dr. P.K.Rath, the programme started by students of the Centre for Journalism & Mass Communication speaking on the National Press Day.
After them, Professor S.K.Behera delivered his keynote address on the National Press Day. He dwelled on the importance of a free press in a democratic country like India and traced the history of the Press Council of India and the first and second Press Commissions.
He said that since the media landscape of the country has changed a lot after the second press commission, there is a need for a third press commission. He also described media as the fourth pillar of democracy and quoted Times of India to introduce the concept of the fifth pillar. The Programme was attended by the students and Faculty members of the Centre for Journalism & Mass Communication.
