New Year Celebrations Cancelled across India
TNI Bureau: India mourned and muted the New Year celebrations paying tribute to the departed soul of 23-year-old para-medical student, who closed her eyes forever battling for life after brutal gangrape by six in Delhi. The national capital poured tears and the protests continued at Jantar Mantar demanding justice for the victim and safety of Delhi women.
Even Congress President Sonia Gandhi, opposition party BJP, entertainment industry Bollywood and even Odisha Chief Minister decided not to celebrate the New Year 2013 mourning the death of the gangrape victim.
India’s armed forces have also cancelled New Year’s Eve parties, to pay homage to the deceased, whose death triggered an international uproar. The army, navy and air force were reportedly ordered to cancel any parties on the eve of New Year.
The heinous incident, which sparked nationwide protests and for which the government are facing severe criticism from all ends, still continued in the national capital. The protesters are demanding strong laws that would protect women from sexual assault and eve teasing. The victim, whom the media named as Damini and Amanat is no more with us, but her cry will echo the atmosphere till her culprits are hanged or get strong punishment.
Not only political parties and the armed forces, even hotels, clubs and business houses and celebrities also decided not to take part or organize any fun party to celebrate the New Year in this sorrowful moment.
Almost all of India, starting from an ordinary citizen to the political leaders at zenith and the high-end celebrities called off celebrations to pay homage to the brave heart girl, who was brutally gangraped for no fault and finally she died on December 29.
