Justice P Sathasivam sworn-in as New CJI

Justice P Sathasivam was sworn-in as the 40th Chief Justice of India (CJI). President Pranab Mukherjee administered the oath of office to him today at a brief ceremony at Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan.

P_SathasivamJustice Sathasivam, 64, succeeded Justice Altamas Kabir, who served as the CJI for over nine months. He will remain in office till April 26, 2014.

The oath taking ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Vice President Hamid Ansari, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, NDA Working Chairperson L K Advani, CPI leader D Raja, several Union ministers.

Born to an agricultural family to Palanisamy and Natchiammal on April 27, 1949, at Kadappanallur village near Bhavani of Erode district in Tamil Nadu Justice Sathasivam graduated in law from Government Law College, Chennai. Later, he enrolled as an Advocate on July 25, 1973, in Madras. He was appointed as a permanent Judge of the Madras High Court on January 8, 1996.

Later, he was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on April 20, 2007. He was then elevated to the post of Judge of Supreme Court on August 21, 2007.
