Decomposed Body of Unidentified Woman Found in Cotton Field Near Goyalpita Village

Bhubaneswar: The decomposed body of an unidentified woman was found in a cotton field near Goyalpita village under Bandhpada police limits in Deogaon block on Wednesday morning.

Police said the woman appeared to be in her late twenties. Her body was partially unclothed and her face had burn injuries. A saree and broken bangles were found nearby.

According to police, some goat herders first noticed the body around 9 a.m. and informed the villagers, who then alerted the authorities. A team of police officers and forensic experts reached the spot to collect evidence and question locals.

Bandhpada outpost officer-in-charge Malay Panda said that the woman might have died five to seven days ago. The body has been sent to the Balangir District Headquarters Hospital for postmortem. The cause of death will be known after the autopsy report is received.

Balangir Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Saroj Kumar Upadhyaya said that an unnatural death case has been registered. Police stations in nearby areas have been informed, and efforts are being made to identify the woman.

Meanwhile, BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty criticised the state government, saying that such incidents reflect the poor state of law and order in Odisha. He added that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had earlier informed the Assembly that around 3,000 rape cases were reported in the state over the past 16 months.

Police said the investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances behind the woman’s death.
