Tamil Nadu adopts Anti-Sri Lanka Resolution

Date:

After DMK put pressure on the Congress at Centre over the Lankan Tamil issue, Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday adopted a resolution unanimously urging the Centre to stop treating Sri Lanka as a friendly country of India.

The resolution, which was moved by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, sought economic ban on Colombo till the torture on Tamils in Sri Lanka is stopped and the culprits responsible for war crimes face international probe.

Jayalalithaa criticised DMK chief Karunanidhi for double standards on the Lankan Tamils issue. She alleged that two Lankan players are in the IPL team owned by Karunandhi’s grand nephew Kalanithi Maran. She further alleged that both Centre and DMK failed to ensure ceasefire in 2009 in Sri Lanka.

The AIADMK chief had earlier asked the UPA government to move amendments to the US-backed resolution on Lankan Tamils issue at UNHRC. However, no amendment had been moved by India last week.
