TNI Bureau: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) alleged that custodial deaths and incidents of police brutality are increasing in Odisha, accusing the police administration of failing to deliver justice while resorting to third-degree torture against ordinary citizens.
Addressing a press conference at Sankha Bhawan, BJD spokesperson Dr. Lenin Mohanty and Biju Chhatra Janata Dal president Ipsita Sahu claimed that incidents of custodial torture have become a matter of serious concern across the state. They alleged that while crime and violence continue to rise, police have failed to take effective action against offenders.
The party leaders cited recent incidents at Barang Police Station, Talachua Marine Police Station in Rajnagar, and the alleged custodial death of a differently-abled youth at Kabisuryanagar Police Station in Ganjam district. They claimed that innocent people were subjected to police excesses and demanded accountability from the authorities.
Dr. Mohanty alleged that Ganjam has become a hotspot for illegal minor mineral smuggling and criminal activities. Referring to a report presented in Parliament by the Union Home Ministry, he claimed that Odisha recorded 10 custodial deaths during 2025-26.
Ipsita Sahu alleged that the state’s law-and-order situation has deteriorated under the BJP government and demanded an impartial probe into the Kabisuryanagar custodial death case. She warned that the BJD would approach the National Human Rights Commission if strict action is not taken against those responsible.
