Man Dies After Alleged Custodial Torture in Ganjam; HRPC to Probe Incident

TNI Bureau: A 32-year-old man from Ganjam district died after allegedly being assaulted in police custody, sparking outrage among family members and locals. The deceased, Sushant Sahu of Subulia village under Kabisuryanagar police limits, died while undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.

Family members alleged that Sushant was picked up by police on May 25 in connection with a dispute at a stone quarry and was subjected to custodial torture. After his health deteriorated, he was first admitted to Aska Hospital and later shifted to MKCG Hospital, where he succumbed.

Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination. Ganjam SP Harisha BC said an investigation is underway into the allegations, including claims of illegal detention, and the exact cause of death will be ascertained after the probe.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP) Y.B. Khurania has directed the Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) to conduct an inquiry into the alleged custodial death at Kabisuryanagar police station. The HRPC will investigate the circumstances leading to the incident and submit its findings.
