Supreme Court upholds Gujarat Lokayukta’s Appointment

Date:

TNI Bureau: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi received a major setback on Wednesday, as the Supreme Court upheld the Gujarat High Court’s decision, which termed the appointment of Lokayukta by the Government constitutional.

Narendra Modi’s government had challenged Government Kamla Beniwal’s decision to appoint Justice (Retd.) R.A. Mehta as the Lokayukta of Gujarat. He alleged that the Governor did not consult his government on this issue.

A bench of Justices B S Chauhan and F M Ibrahim Kalifulla of Gujarat High Court had given a split verdict, but Justice V M Sahai, who acted as the third judge to end the impasse, had criticised Modi while giving his verdict in favour of the Governor.
