BJP takes Haryana, Sushma Swaraj’s Sister Loses
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) created history in Haryana, as it secured a comfortable majority in the state to form the next government. The party won 47 out of 90 seats, while Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) managed to win just 19 seats. Congress slumped to third spot with 15 seats. The HJC ended up at just two seats.
In 2009 polls, BJP had won just 4 seats. They also shattered their previous best of 16 seats. For the first time, the party did not tie up with regional party and achieved tremendous success on its own.
Despite the huge success, BJP suffered a big setback when Union Minister Sushma Swaraj’s sister Dr. Vandana Sharma lost the polls from Safidon. She lost to Independent candidate Jashbir Deswal by a slender margin of 1,422 votes. Deswal had contested as an Independent after being denied party ticket by the Congress.
