CAG finds irregularities in Farm Loan Waiver

Date:

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed uproarious scenes today over the alleged irregularities in UPA Government’s ambitious Rs 52,000 crore farm loan waiver scheme. The PM has assured the house strong action will be taken if any irregularities are found in the probe.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has submitted its report on the Implementation of Agricultural Debt Waiver and Debt Relief Scheme, 2008, saying many eligible people were denied the benefits, while several ineligible farmers were favoured.

It could be recalled that the ambitious Farm Loan Waiver scheme in 2008 helped the UPA II government bounce back to power in 2009 with a much better show as compared to 2004. The opposition accused the government of failing to give the benefits to the needy farmers, while the farmer suicide is on the rise elsewhere in the country.
