American Novelist Gore Vidal dies at 86

TNI Bureau: Veteran US novelist Gore Vidal has passed away following complications of pneumonia. He was 86. He is known for his works such as “Lincoln” and “Myra Breckinridge”.

The writer died on Tuesday at his home in the Hollywood Hill. With his demise, the country lost one of the giants of American writers. He was well as a critic of the flamboyant social and sexual life of Americans.

He is the contemporary writer of Norman Mailer and Truman Capote. Entire US paid homage to the great novelist. “Mr Vidal was, at the end of his life, an Augustan figure who believed himself to be the last of a breed, and he was probably right,” the New York Times wrote in its obituary.

Vidal wrote 25 novels, essays, Broadway hits, screenplays and television dramas. His novel “The City and the Pillar” talks about homosexuality. Through the novel, he created a distinct identity in American literature.

His novels also deal with US politics and history. “Burr” (1973), “1876” (1976), “Lincoln” (1984), “Empire” (1987), “Hollywood” (1990), and “The Golden Age” (2000) are the novels that show the rise of an American Empire.

His Satires included “Kalki” (1978), “Duluth” (1983) and “Live from Golgotha: the Gospel according to Gore Vidal” (1992).
