TNI Bureau: A diplomatic controversy has surfaced after Donald Trump made a controversial remark about India, prompting a measured response from Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and a sharp reaction from the Iranian Consulate in Mumbai.
The row began after Trump, in a post linked to his campaign rhetoric, reportedly referred to countries like India in derogatory terms while speaking on immigration. The comment quickly drew attention in India, triggering criticism across political and diplomatic circles.
The MEA, however, initially maintained a cautious stance. Responding to media queries, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have seen reports,” avoiding any immediate strong condemnation. The response was widely viewed as calibrated, reflecting India’s attempt to balance its reaction without escalating tensions.
In a subsequent clarification, the MEA described the remarks as “uninformed and inappropriate,” signalling disapproval while continuing its restrained diplomatic approach. The government’s response indicates a preference to address the issue without allowing it to disrupt broader India–US relations.
Amid this, the Iranian Consulate in Mumbai took an unusually direct swipe at Trump. In a social media post, the mission mocked the former US President’s comment and urged him to visit India before making such statements. It also highlighted India’s civilisational legacy, countering the narrative projected in Trump’s remark.
The intervention by the Iranian mission has added a new dimension to the controversy, bringing in a third country and underscoring the geopolitical undertones of the episode.
The incident has sparked debate over whether India’s response was too restrained or diplomatically prudent. While critics have called for a stronger rebuttal, others view the MEA’s approach as consistent with India’s strategic and measured foreign policy stance.
As reactions continue to unfold, the episode once again highlights how political rhetoric by global leaders can quickly evolve into diplomatic flashpoints with wider international implications.
