TNI Bureau: In a landmark moment for India’s electoral history, West Bengal recorded an unprecedented 92.40% voter turnout (till 9 PM), the highest since Independence, reflecting an extraordinary surge in democratic participation. Polling stations across the state witnessed long queues from early morning, with enthusiastic participation from women, first-time voters, and the elderly.
In total, 152 assembly constituencies in West Bengal went to polls in the first phase. Remaining 142 seats will go to polls in the second phase on April 29. In 2021, West Bengal had recorded 82.29% voter turnout.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu also reported a robust 85.09% voter turnout, marking its strongest electoral showings the highest since Independence. The state saw steady and peaceful polling, with both urban and rural constituencies contributing to the high participation. It was single phase election for Tamil Nadu.
Officials credit the record turnout in both states to SIR exercise, heightened political awareness, intense electoral competition, and sustained voter mobilisation efforts by stakeholders. While minor incidents of tension were reported in parts of West Bengal, the overall polling process remained largely orderly. CEC Gyanesh Kumar lauded the high voter turnout and thanked each voter who voted today.
The striking voter participation in these two politically significant states underscores a deeply engaged electorate, setting the stage for closely contested results and reinforcing the strength of democratic processes in the country.
