Trump Announces Tie-Up with Reliance for ‘America First Refining’ Project

Date:

TNI Bureau: US President Donald Trump has announced a major partnership with India’s energy giant Reliance Industries to develop a large oil refinery project in the United States under the banner of “America First Refining.” The proposed facility will be set up at the Port of Brownsville in Texas and is being described as the first major new oil refinery to be built in the US in nearly five decades.

Trump made the announcement through a post on his social media platform Truth Social, calling the initiative a “historic $300-billion economic investment.” He said the project would strengthen domestic energy production, create jobs and reinforce America’s push for energy independence.

Project Details

📌 Location: Brownsville, Texas
📌Project developer: America First Refining
📌Estimated economic impact: Around $300 billion
📌Refining capacity: About 168,000 barrels of crude oil per day
📌Feedstock: Primarily American shale oil
📌Construction timeline: Expected to begin in 2026
Once operational, the refinery is expected to process roughly 60 million barrels of crude oil annually and produce large volumes of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel for both domestic consumption and export markets.

Reliance’s Role

Reliance Industries, led by chairman Mukesh Ambani, is expected to provide investment backing and enter into a long-term 20-year offtake agreement to purchase refined petroleum products from the facility. The company operates the world’s largest refining complex at Jamnagar in Gujarat and is widely regarded as a global leader in refining technology and scale.

Strategic Importance

The proposed project is expected to generate thousands of jobs in Texas, boost refining capacity in the US Gulf Coast region and deepen energy cooperation between India and the United States. The Gulf Coast already hosts some of the world’s largest refineries, making it a strategic hub for fuel exports.

Trump described the project as a “massive win for American workers and the energy sector,” linking it to his administration’s policies aimed at encouraging large industrial investments in the United States.

While the announcement sparked interest in energy markets, Reliance Industries has yet to issue a detailed regulatory confirmation regarding its investment in the project. Analysts say that if the plan moves forward as proposed, it could become one of the most significant cross-border energy collaborations between the United States and India.
