By Himanshu Guru: After ‘Kolaveri Di’, it is time now for ‘Gangnam Style’. South Korean Pop sensation PSY’s ‘Gangnam Style’ has created a big buzz on YouTube within a few days of its release in July this year. The music video has become the second most watched video ever. However, as per John Hirai, head of music at YouTube’s Korea-Japan branch, the South Korean video would become the most watched one on YouTube in about a month.

Though ‘Gangnam Style’ is rocking everywhere almost across the globe perhaps India has not been introduced to it. Again, it is also a matter of proud for the Asians as the single number this time has made a buzz in international pop world from South Korea.

So far the music video has been viewed over 730 million times on YouTube and a number of world political and entertainment biggies including Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt, the British Prime Minister David Cameron and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon have shown their great interest tapping to the tune of “Gangnam Style”. Even Moon hailed the song as a “force for world peace”. The video debuted at number one on the Gaon Chart, the national record chart of South Korea.

The title “Gangnam Style” is a Korean neologism that refers to a lifestyle associated with the Gangnam District of Seoul. PSY’s singing and amusing dance moves in the music video has earned laurels.

After trending in YouTube, PSY (34) has so far performed live in various locations such as Madison Square Garden, The Today Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Samsung commercials.

The crazy signature step of the song, the horse-riding steps have become a smash hit and its cultural impact has been seen at many places throughout the world. The song has so far already crossed the record of singer Jennifer Lopez’s dance hit “On the Floor” from the second position. Of course, for now, it still trails behind Canadian teenage heartthrob Justin Bieber’s “Baby”, which has had over 795 million hits, but is expected to surpass this record soon too.

The number has also been recognized by Guinness World Records as the most “liked” video in YouTube history.

“Gangnam Style” is the most viewed video now in more than 30 countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
