TNI Bureau: In a bid to tackle rising air pollution levels, the Odisha government announced a series of stringent measures for Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The new directives have come into force with immediate effect and are aimed at reducing dust and vehicular emissions in the twin cities.
As per the guidelines, all construction activities will remain prohibited between 6 pm and 10 am to minimise dust pollution. Demolition of old buildings and structures within municipal limits has also been banned until further notice.
The movement and entry of trucks and other heavy vehicles inside city areas have been restricted. Police and Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials have been instructed to strictly monitor vehicle fitness and emission norms.
To control airdonpatoe dust, water sprinkling will be carried out three times a day on National Highways and major roads within the cities. Roadside eateries and hotels have been barred from using coal or firewood as fuel, while open burning of garbage, dry leaves or plastic has been strictly prohibited.
The Forest and Environment Minister warned that strict legal action and heavy penalties will be imposed on those found violating the new norms. The government said the measures are necessary to improve air quality and protect public health in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
