TNI Bureau: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted interim relief to the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), permitting the party to temporarily operate three of its bank accounts that had been frozen by the police.
A single-judge bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharya said the court was unable to find sufficient material to justify the “hurried” freezing of the accounts. To ensure transparency, the Court appointed retired judge Justice Subrata Talukdar as a Special Officer to supervise the operation of the accounts.
The appointment will remain in effect until September 30.The Court clarified that the funds can be used only for the party’s day-to-day expenses and for legal costs.
It also made it clear that the TMC-rebel faction, which had complained to the police, will not be allowed to approach the Special Officer until the Election Commission of India takes a decision on the matter.
The interim order came after the rebel MLA and complainant argued that allowing the petitioner TMC to operate the accounts could lead to tampering with valuable evidence.
However, the Court held that a complete freeze was not warranted at this stage and that limited access under judicial oversight would balance both concerns.
This order provides immediate operational relief to the TMC while keeping the accounts under court-monitored supervision till the next hearing.
