TNI Bureau: BJD Rajya Sabha MP Manas Ranjan Mangaraj has demanded an immediate revision of coal royalty rates in the Rajya Sabha, citing Odisha’s interests. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Mangaraj said that despite continuous growth in coal production, the royalty rates have not been revised for more than 10 years, which is unjust to Odisha.
He stated that the delay in revising the royalty rates is causing the state to lose more than ₹10,000 crore annually, affecting its developmental and welfare activities. Mangaraj highlighted that Odisha plays a significant role in the country’s energy security and industrial development, and while the entire nation benefits from the state’s mineral resources, the people of Odisha are paying a heavy price.
He also pointed out that mining activities in the state have led to environmental damage, including deforestation, air and water pollution, and large-scale displacement of people. This has adversely affected the livelihoods and social life of the affected communities. Mangaraj further said that mining is impacting the state’s biodiversity and that adequate compensation is not being provided, reflecting an imbalanced federal structure.
He emphasized that states rich in natural resources, which contribute significantly to national development, should not suffer financially. Mangaraj urged the government to revise coal royalty rates immediately in the interest of Odisha.
