Himanta Biswa Sarma Begins Second Term as Assam Chief Minister

TNI Bureau: Senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured a massive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Veterinary College playground in Khanapara, Guwahati, amid a grand gathering attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President Nitin Nabin, several Union Ministers, and Chief Ministers of NDA-ruled states. Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma and his council of ministers.

The BJP-led alliance returned to power with an overwhelming mandate, winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly. Sarma was unanimously elected leader of the NDA legislature party a day before the ceremony.

Along with Sarma, Rameswar Teli (BJP), Atul Bora (AGP), Charan Boro (BPF) and Ajanta Neog (BJP), have been inducted into the Cabinet. The new government is expected to focus on infrastructure expansion, industrial investment, welfare delivery, flood management, and implementation of key central schemes in the state.

Addressing supporters after taking oath, Sarma thanked the people of Assam for giving the NDA another decisive mandate and said his government would continue working for development, protection of Assamese identity, and economic growth in the Northeast.
