Farmer commits Suicide in Nabarangpur

Date:

Nabarangpur, 18-01-13 (By Rakesh Gupta): Poverty stricken KBK districts face lethal consequences each day. After a woman suicide yesterday in Balangir district along with her young children due to poverty, now a farmer has committed suicide in Nabarangpur district. Failure of crop despite his best efforts to revive might be the most probable reason of the suicide as per the locals.

As per the reports coming from Nabarangpur, Mrutyunjoya De is a poor farmer from village Soruguli in the Raighar block, approximately 90 km away from the district head quarter Nabarangpur. Today his dead body was found hanged to the trunk of a tree.

As per the reports, for the last few months De was in great depression due to scarcity of money. He had cultivated vegetables and maize crops in his land by investing money that he had got as loan from a bank and also in the way of hand loan.

Due to poor irrigation facility available in the area, the farmer had arranged an electric motor to irrigate his land. But to his misfortune, Raighar area suffers from low voltage of electricity problem for long. As a result, the electric motor also could not be utilized, which was his last weapon to retrieve his farming.

Enraged by the failure of the government to provide proper assistance to the poor farmers, which finally led to the death of De, the locales have staged a demonstration today on the Raighar-Umerkote connecting road, keeping the dead body on the road.

Nabarangpur MP Pradip Majhi also joined the agitation and blamed the state Government as well as the electricity service provider of the area, SOUTHCO. for the death of the farmer.

The mob has called for a ‘Raighar Bandh’ today in demand of compensation to the farmer’s family. They have sought the SouthCo. to immediately complete work of the grid substation, likely to be constructed at Dabugam.

A FIR has been lodged by Shymal Chandra De, younger brother of the victim at the Raighar police station in this connection.
