Barang Case: Cops Under the Scanner; Deny Allegations

TNI Bureau: The Director General of Police (DGP) has sought a report from the Police Commissioner regarding allegations of third-degree torture of a youth at Baranga police station in Cuttack. DGP Y.B. Khurania stated that further action would be taken after reviewing the report.

Responding to the allegations, Cuttack DCP clarified that no torture was inflicted on the youth, identified as Rakesh, during his stay at the police station. He stated that Rakesh has been suffering from multiple health issues, including kidney and lung-related ailments.

The DCP said no evidence of custodial torture has been found within the police station premises so far. He added that CCTV footage from the police station would be examined as part of the investigation.

According to the police, Rakesh was called to the station for the identification of a decomposed body and was released the same day within 24 hours. The DCP further informed that doctors are currently monitoring his health condition.

However, Rakesh and his family members have different versions. They allege brutality, torture and intimidation by the police.
