The Union Government has announced that a series of stamps depicting the entire environmental profile of the country will be launched soon. Speaking after releasing the commemorative stamp to mark the Centenary year of Zoological Survey of India here today, Union Minister of Communication and Information Technology Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Department of Posts will bring out stamps for daily use and has already brought out a series of stamps on flora and fauna, classical musicians, revolutionaries of India.
Shri Prasad released the commemorative stamp in the presence of Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Prakash Javadekar.
Addressing the gathering, which included Zoology students of Delhi University, Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Shri Prakash Javadekar urged the scientists of Zoological Survey of India to reach out to the students to motivate them and create more interest among students in basic sciences.
Shri Javadekar said that basic and fundamental sciences are important and lead to newer research. He added that ZSI is digitizing its various publications and reports. Once this process is completed, it will become a part of the National Digital Library, enabling easy access of these publications to the student community.

The Union Ministers also released publications of Zoological Survey of India – the “Centenary Souvenir”, the “Centenary Directory” and “A Glorious 100”. Special Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Hem Pande delivered the welcome address. Advisor, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Dr. Dalwani delivered the vote of thanks.
Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) was established on 1st July 1916 to promote the survey, exploration, research and documentation leading to the advancement in our knowledge on various aspects of animal taxonomy of the Indian subcontinent. Of the nearly 100, 000 species of animals known to occur in India, it is the ZSI that brought the knowledge to the scientific community about many of them as the new and endemic species of animals found in this country. ZSI has been declared as the designated repository for the National Zoological Collection as per Section 39 of the National Biodiversity Act, 2002.
Many specimens in the collections of ZSI are more than 200-year old. To meet the challenges of biodiversity conservation, sustainable utilization and dissemination of knowledge on faunal diversity to all stakeholders, the Survey is equipped with modern tools and techniques such as scanning electron microscopes, digital stereo zoom microscopes, GIS tools, data basing tools and the DNA bar coding technology.
ZSI is a premier institution on animal taxonomy in India under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
