AIBA suspends Sarita Devi for showing Dissent
The AIBA (International Boxing Association) has suspended Indian female Boxer L. Sarita Devi for showing dissent at Incheon Asian Games. Her coach Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu and Indian chef-de-mission AJ Sumariwalla were also banned from participating any Boxing events till further notice.
Sarita had protested after the judges deliberately fixed her semifinal bout against the much weaker Korean opponent and gifted the match to the host country. Despite dominating the bout against Park Ji-Na, Sarita was robbed of the match and had to be content with the bronze medal.
Sarita and her husband protested against the decision and decided to lodge a protest, but that was rejected citing technical reasons. She had refused to accept the medal and gifted her to the Korean Boxer during the medal ceremony. Later, after the intervention of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), she relented and accepted the medal.
