The Cyclone Phailin, which played havoc and triggered widespread devastation across the Odisha Coast, including Gopalpur, Berhampur, Nayagarh, Puri, Khordha, Kendrapara, Paradip, Jagatsinghpur and Bhubaneswar, has weakened further this morning.
Widespread damages were reported from Gopalpur, Berhampur, Paradip and Nayagarh. A large number of trees fell to the ground, while mobile towers were damaged in many parts of Gopalpur and Berhampur. A large number of electric poles were uprooted. Cars, bikes and other vehicles were damaged, while many houses collapsed to the ground in Ganjam and Nayagarh districts. The Berhampur-Gopalpur road was blocked due to tree falling.
Although the cyclone, which hit the Odisha Coast at a speed of 210 km/hour, has weakened, heavy rain will continue in many parts of Odisha for the next two days. Rescue and relief operation have begun in full swing. Efforts are on to restore the essential services, including power and communication system.
The Cyclone is now centred near Phulbani. It will turn into a deep depression and head towards Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. The administration had evacuated around 8.61 lakh people before the cyclone in just 24 hours, which is a world record.
According to Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Surjya Narayan Patro, seven people had lost their lives before Phailin hit the Odisha Coast. But, there were no reports of casualties after the cyclone. Three people had died in Jagatsinghpur district, while two people lost their lives in Ganjam district. One each died in Khordha and Nayagarh districts.

According to Special Relief Commissioner Pradipta Mohapatra, Cyclone Phailin caused a loss of approximately Rs 1,400 crore, which could be higher when the actual estimates begin. In total, 80,53,000 people were affected. 39 urban areas and 14,515 villages in 99 blocks were hit by Phailin. Over 3 lakh hectares of farm land suffered losses.
