Allahabad HC bans Cast-based Rallies in Uttar Pradesh

Date:

In a major blow to the political parties in Uttar Pradesh, the Allahabad High Court banned all caste-based rallies in the state with immediate effect. The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad HC also issued notices to BJP, Congress, Samajwadi Party and BSP on this matter.

MayaOnly four days ago, Mayawati’s BSP had organised a Dalit-Brahmin rally in Lucknow to seek their support in the 2014 general elections. The verdict comes as a big blow to Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party and BSP’s Mayawati, who are known for doing caste-based politics to achieve their political goal.

In North Indian politics, caste plays a major role in determining the political landscape of the state. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar witness the most caste-driven politics in India.
